Areal Flood Advisory, Flash Flood Watch

Statement as of 6:41 PM MDT on July 31, 2014

Expires 6:00 AM EDT on August 01, 2014

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued an

* Arroyo and Small Stream Flood Advisory for...
northwestern Socorro County in central New Mexico
northeastern Catron County in west central New Mexico
south central Cibola County in west central New Mexico

* until 845 PM MDT

* at 639 PM MDT National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated
moderate to occasionally heavy rain over an area that has already
received copious amounts of moisture. Expect an additional 0.4 to
0.6 inches across rural south central Cibola County and northeast
Catron and far northwest Socorro counties. Most of the impacts
will be on Acoma and Alamo lands to the east and ranch land
to the west. State Highway 117 could be impacted.

* Strong flows and high water levels are expected in arroyos... small
streams and over low water crossings. Rapid runoff can also be
expected immediately over and downstream from wildfire burn scars.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to tell how much
water is on the Road... do not drive through fast moving water of
unknown depth.

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through late tonight...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* a portion of north and central New Mexico... including the
following areas... Central Highlands... east slopes Sangre de
Cristo Mountains... Estancia valley... Jemez Mountains... northeast
Highlands... northwest Highlands... Sandia/Manzano Mountains...
Santa Fe Metro area... southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains above
9500 feet... Southwest Mountains... west Central Highlands... west
central mountains and west slopes Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

* Through late tonight

* abundant moisture in place and passing disturbances aloft will
produce scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms capable
of heavy rain and flash flooding. Storms should become most
widespread across the west and northwest mountains this
afternoon... then the focus should shift to the central and north
central mountains and adjacent Highlands during the evening and
overnight. Slow storm motions are expected with most cells
drifting toward the southeast or south.

* Locations where the ground is already saturated from recent
rainfall will be favored for flash flooding. Other vulnerable
locations will include steep terrain... urban areas and burn
scars. Keep a watchful eye on arroyos and small streams... and
stay out of flooded low water crossings. Monitor the latest
forecasts closely and be prepared to take immediate action if a
warning or advisory is issued.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to
flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
Monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash
flood warnings be issued.
